Introducing the Nature Cart!

A Rolling Nature Museum for Hands-On Discovery
Think of the Nature Cart as a mini nature museum on wheels that's full of open-ended possibilities and natural loose parts for children to explore, sort, count, design, and wonder! This mobile cart brings the magic of the outdoors into your learning space and invites curiosity and creativity wherever it rolls.

What’s Inside?

Each Nature Cart is stocked with an evolving mix of open-ended items that encourage hands-on discovery. While the contents may vary, you’ll often find:
  • Natural loose parts such as pinecones, shells, seed pods, bark, stones, and sticks
  • Clipboards, paper, and pencils for drawing, writing, or making observations
  • Small baskets and trays for sorting, collecting, and creating
  • Nature Cards or activity cards or prompts designed to guide exploration and spark curiosity

These materials are simple by design, natural, tactile, and full of possibilities. They invite children to slow down, look closely, and use their imaginations.

How It Works

The Nature Cart is designed to roll (literally and figuratively) into a variety of spaces. It can be wheeled outdoors for fresh-air exploration or moved from classroom to classroom within a center, bringing nature-based learning to different age groups and settings. Children might sort stones by size, arrange leaves into patterns, sketch seed pods, or build tiny structures using sticks and bark.

At the heart of the Nature Cart is the concept of loose parts play, open-ended materials that can be moved, combined, taken apart, and reimagined in countless ways. Loose parts encourage children to think creatively, solve problems, and follow their own ideas, all while engaging deeply with the textures and rhythms of the natural world.

There’s no right or wrong way to interact with the cart, it’s about inviting curiosity, slowing down, and forming personal connections with the materials in front of them.
Why It Matters.
The Nature Cart is more than just a collection of objects ... it’s a mindset. It helps children connect with the natural world, encourages care + curiosity, and creates space for quiet, meaningful engagement. Whether it’s used daily or once in a while, it brings a touch of wild wonder into everyday learning.

Keeping the Cart Full and Fresh

Nature is always changing, and so should the cart. To keep things seasonal and inspiring, it helps to rotate materials regularly. Families, caregivers, or staff can contribute by collecting natural items like pinecones, seed pods, or small stones during walks or trips to the park. Gently used baskets, wooden trays, and child-friendly tools are also welcome additions.

A few friendly foraging tips: only collect what’s plentiful, take small amounts, and always leave plenty behind for wildlife and others to enjoy.

Nature on the Go!
