Turning an Underused Courtyard into a Living Laboratory

What began as a modest outdoor space once only occasionally used for gardening and composting, has been transformed into a thriving, multi-purpose courtyard through the creation of Mud + Market Days. This initiative demonstrates how creativity, intention, and child-centered design can turn an overlooked area into a dynamic, joyful, and deeply educational environment.

Recognizing the potential of the space, educators and program leaders imagined something more: a weekly rhythm of outdoor learning experiences that bring nature, sustainability, and community into focus. With a few enhancements and a clear vision, Mud + Market Days were born.

Children don’t just learn about sustainability ... they live it.
Every scoop of soil, every turn of compost, every pretend sale at the market is part of a story they’re writing with their own hands.

​What Happens on Mud + Market Days?​

​Each classroom now rotates through a dedicated day in the courtyard, engaging in four interconnected activities:

• Gardening: Planting, watering, harvesting, and observing seasonal changes in raised beds
• Composting: Adding scraps to the compost bin, turning the pile, and learning how waste becomes soil
• Mud Kitchen Play: Sensory-rich, imaginative exploration with natural materials, tools, and pretend recipes
• Farmers Market Role-Play: Sorting, "selling," weighing produce, and creating signage for a child-led market stand

These are not one-off enrichment moments, they are woven into the fabric of the weekly routine. Children return again and again, deepening their skills, expanding their curiosity, and building lasting connections to the environment and each other.

We didn’t build something new, we reimagined what we already had.

The shift isn’t just structural ... it’s philosophical.

Mud + Market Days embody a values-driven approach to early childhood education, aligning seamlessly with themes of social justice, sustainability, and hands-on learning. Through regular participation in real-life processes like growing food, composting waste, and engaging in community trade, children begin to internalize powerful ideas:

• Where does our food come from?
• What happens to the things we throw away?
• How can we take care of the Earth and each other?

In the courtyard, these aren’t abstract questions, they are lived experiences. Children feel the dirt in their hands, see the transformation of scraps into soil, and take pride in “selling” herbs or flowers they helped grow. These activities foster not only environmental literacy but also empathy, cooperation, and an understanding of interdependence.

Using What We Have, Building What We Need

One of the most inspiring aspects of Mud + Market Days is how little was needed to make it happen. Rather than waiting for a full renovation or expensive materials, educators took stock of what was already available:

• Garden beds and compost bins
• A dramatic play farmer market stand and picnic tables
• Water access (rain barrels) and open space
• Natural loose parts, baskets, and repurposed tools

With intention and a bit of organizing, these everyday items became the foundation of a living classroom, a space where children are free to explore, express, and engage with real-world concepts in tangible, developmentally appropriate ways.

The program is a model for what’s possible when educators design with purpose and trust children’s capacity to learn through experience.
