Equity, Inclusion + Environmental Stewardship in Early Childhood Education
At Growing Green, we believe that teaching children to care for the Earth must include teaching them to care for one another. Our approach to sustainability is rooted in social justice, representation, and belonging, because we know the health of our planet and the well-being of its people are deeply connected.

Environmental Justice Is Social Justice

​Food deserts, polluted water, and lack of green space are not just environmental issues, they’re equity issues. That’s why our curriculum introduces children to concepts like food justice, water access, and conservation in age-appropriate, empowering ways.

Children:

• Grow food and explore gardens
• Learn where food comes from, and who has access to it
• Discuss fairness in clean water and healthy resources
• Build empathy through real-world, hands-on inquiry

​Why We Start with Food: Connecting Culture, Community + Nature

We start with food ... because food connects us all.
Food is culture, community, and care. It’s one of the most tangible ways children understand their place in the world and how resources are shared or not. That's why we begin our justice-centered sustainability work with food.

Environmental justice includes access to healthy food and clean water, essentials not equally available to all. Many communities face food deserts, lack safe water, or live far from fresh produce. These challenges are tied to racial, economic, and environmental inequality.

In our curriculum, children:

• Grow food in classroom and community gardens
• Learn where their food comes from and why access matters
• Explore water as a shared, precious resource
• Reflect (in age-appropriate ways) on food and water equity
• Build empathy for those facing resource insecurity

Starting with food helps young learners form deep connections between nature, culture, and justice, planting the seeds for lifelong stewardship and equity-minded thinking.

When children feel safe, seen + valued, they grow into empathetic stewards of both people + planet. We believe environmental justice + social justice are inseparable. Early childhood is where the roots of equity, care + connection begin to take hold.
