Catholic Teaching, Nature-Based Learning + Sustainability

Caring for Creation Through Faith, Wonder + Action
At Growing Green Curriculum, we believe that caring for the earth is not only an educational responsibility, it is a spiritual one. Rooted in Catholic teaching and inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato si’, our approach honors creation as a sacred gift and recognizes children as capable stewards of God’s world.

Nature-based learning offers a powerful way to unite faith, science, and sustainability, helping children grow not only in knowledge, but in reverence, responsibility, and compassion.
Rooted in Faith. Growing with the Earth.

Creation in Catholic Teaching: A Sacred Trust

Catholic tradition teaches that the world is created by God out of love and declared “good.” Creation is not simply a resource to be used, but a relationship to be respected. Humanity is entrusted with the care of creation...not as owners, but as stewards.

This understanding shapes how we teach children:
  • The earth is a gift, not a commodity
  • All living things have value and purpose
  • Humans are called to protect, not dominate, the natural world
  • Caring for creation is an expression of gratitude to God

When children learn outdoors, explore living systems, and care for plants, soil, and animals, they are practicing stewardship in ways that are concrete, meaningful, and developmentally appropriate.

Laudato si’: Care for Our Common Home

In Laudato si’, Pope Francis calls the global community to recognize that the environmental crisis is also a moral and spiritual crisis. He introduces the concept of integral ecology, which teaches that human dignity, social justice, and environmental health are inseparable.

Key messages from Laudato si’ that guide our work include:
  • Everything is connected: people, nature, and future generations
  • Environmental harm often impacts the poorest and most vulnerable first
  • Caring for the earth is an act of love for our neighbors
  • True sustainability begins with a conversion of heart, not just behavior

Pope Francis invites educators and families to nurture an ecological conversion, a way of living where care for creation flows naturally from faith, humility, and love.

Catholic Social Teaching + Sustainability

Sustainability is deeply aligned with Catholic Social Teaching (CST). When children engage in reuse, conservation, gardening, and mindful consumption, they are practicing core Catholic values:
  • Human Dignity – Respecting life in all its forms
  • Solidarity – Understanding our shared responsibility for the world
  • Care for the Poor and Vulnerable – Recognizing that environmental damage affects people unequally
  • Stewardship of Creation – Using resources wisely and with gratitude
  • The Common Good – Making choices that benefit everyone, now and in the future

Through everyday actions, children learn that small choices (how we use materials, food, water, and energy) are connected to justice, compassion, and care.
Wonder Leads to Stewardship
When children explore creation, they grow in faith + compassion.

Why Nature-Based Learning Matters in Catholic Education

Nature-based learning is not an “extra”, it is a natural expression of Catholic formation. When children learn through nature, they encounter God’s creation directly and experientially.

Through outdoor and sustainability-focused learning, children:
  • Develop wonder and awe, which are foundations of faith
  • Observe life cycles, growth, and renewal
  • Learn patience, responsibility, and care
  • Understand interdependence and community
  • Experience quiet reflection, curiosity, and joy

These experiences nurture both the mind and the spirit, helping children see the world as something to love and protect.

Formation Begins Early

Early childhood is a critical time for shaping values. Young children are especially receptive to lessons of care, empathy, and responsibility. Nature-based sustainability practices help children:
  • Build respect for living things
  • Practice gentleness and care
  • Understand that their actions matter
  • Develop habits of reuse, conservation, and gratitude

By integrating sustainability into daily routines, children learn that caring for creation is simply part of how we live our faith.

Practical Ways We Live This Vision

At Growing Green, Catholic teaching and sustainability are woven into daily practice:
  • Reusing and repurposing materials rather than consuming new ones
  • Gardening and caring for living things
  • Learning outdoors whenever possible
  • Exploring waste reduction, composting, and recycling
  • Encouraging gratitude for natural resources
  • Connecting care for the earth with care for others

These practices help children understand that sustainability is not about fear or sacrifice, it is about hope, creativity, and love.

A Call to Hope + Action

Pope Francis reminds us that the future of our common home depends on the choices we make today, and the values we pass on to children. Catholic education has a unique role in shaping hearts that are attentive, compassionate, and committed to the common good.
By grounding nature-based learning in faith, we help children grow into people who:
  • See creation as sacred
  • Understand their role as caretakers
  • Act with responsibility and joy
  • Live their faith through love of the earth and one another
Caring for creation is not separate from Catholic life...it is a living expression of it.
